Frequently Asked Questions About Graduate Visas

The Graduate visa allows international students who have successfully completed a UK degree to stay and work for 2 years (3 years for PhD graduates). You must have studied with a licensed student sponsor, completed an eligible course, hold valid Student visa permission when applying, and have never previously held a Graduate visa.

The May 2025 White Paper proposes reducing the Graduate visa from 2 years to 18 months for all graduates (including PhD holders who currently get 3 years). However, these are proposals only - no changes have been implemented yet. The Migration Advisory Committee recommended keeping the current system, and any changes require formal Immigration Rules amendments.

The application fee is £880 per person, plus Immigration Health Surcharge of £1,035 per year (£2,070 for 2 years, £3,105 for PhD 3-year visas). Processing typically takes up to 8 weeks. You can work while your application is pending if you studied at a higher education provider with track record of compliance.

You can work in any job at any skill level, be self-employed, or start your own business. The only restriction is you cannot work as a professional sportsperson. You don't need employer sponsorship and can change jobs freely. You can also study, but only courses not eligible for Student visas.

Only dependants who were already in the UK as your Student visa dependants can apply to continue as Graduate visa dependants. You cannot bring new dependants to the UK on this visa. Each dependant pays the same fees as the main applicant.

You must apply from within the UK before your Student visa expires, after your university has notified the Home Office of your successful completion. You need to have studied the minimum required period in the UK: full duration for courses ≤12 months, or at least 12 months for longer courses.

No, Graduate visas cannot be extended and you can only hold one Graduate visa in your lifetime. You must switch to another visa type (like Skilled Worker visa) if you want to stay longer. Planning your transition before the Graduate visa expires is crucial for maintaining legal status.

Start job searching 12-18 months before graduation, targeting employers with sponsor licences who can offer Skilled Worker visas. Focus on roles requiring degree-level qualifications (RQF6+). Build relationships with employers early and consider pursuing higher qualifications if beneficial. Stay informed about immigration rule changes through official sources.
