Frequently Asked Questions About UK Student Visas

You need an unconditional offer from a licensed UK university, a Certificate of Acceptance for Studies (CAS), proof of sufficient funds (£1,450/month in London, £1,125/month elsewhere for 9 months from January 2025), English language proficiency (B2 level for degree courses), and a valid passport. You must be 16+ and studying a course longer than 6 months.

The visa fee is £524, plus CAS fee of £25, and Immigration Health Surcharge (£776 per year for students). Processing takes 3 weeks if applying from outside UK, or 8 weeks if applying from within UK. You can apply up to 6 months before your course starts.

From January 2, 2025, students in London must show £1,450 per month (increased from £1,334), while students outside London need £1,125 per month (increased from £1,023). You must demonstrate funds for 9 months plus your first year's tuition fees, held for 28 consecutive days.

From December 31, 2024, physical Biometric Residence Permits (BRPs) are no longer valid. All students must create a UKVI account to access their digital eVisa. If you have a BRP, keep it as it may be useful for future applications, but your legal status is now confirmed through the eVisa system.

Yes, students on degree-level+ courses can work up to 20 hours per week during term time and full-time during holidays. Below degree level students have more restrictions. You cannot be self-employed or work as a professional sportsperson. Always check your specific visa conditions and university policies.

Generally, only PhD students and those on courses 9+ months at postgraduate level can bring dependants. From proposed 2025 changes, adult dependants will need to demonstrate A1 level English. Each dependant pays separate visa fees and Immigration Health Surcharge. Check current eligibility as rules are changing.

The Graduate visa allows you to stay 2 years (3 years for PhD graduates) after completing your degree to work at any skill level. You must complete your original course of study to be eligible. Proposed changes may reduce this to 18 months, but no changes have been implemented yet.

Proposed changes include: Graduate visa reduction from 2 to 1.5 years, higher English language requirements (B2+ level), stricter university compliance rules, 6% levy on international student fees, and enhanced dependant restrictions. These are proposals - current rules remain in effect until officially changed.
