Do I need a visa or ETA to visit the UK?

This depends on your nationality. From January 8, 2025, non-European visa-exempt nationals (US, Canada, Australia, etc.) need an ETA (£10). From April 2, 2025, most Europeans also need an ETA. What's the difference between an ETA and a Standard Visitor visa?

An ETA (£10) is for visa-exempt nationals and allows multiple 6-month visits over 2 years. A Standard Visitor visa (£115) is for nationals who cannot use the ETA system and is typically valid for 6 months. Both allow tourism, business visits, and family visits but have different application processes and requirements.

How long can I stay in the UK on a visit visa or ETA?

Both ETAs and Standard Visitor visas typically allow stays up to 6 months per visit. You must leave the UK at the end of each visit and cannot live in the UK through repeated visits. Immigration officers can refuse entry if your travel pattern suggests you're trying to live in the UK.

What activities are permitted on a visit visa?

Permitted activities include tourism, business meetings, conferences, family visits, short courses up to 30 days, medical treatment, and getting married (Marriage Visitor visa). You cannot work, study for extended periods, or access public funds. Specific business activities have detailed rules we can advise on.

What documents do I need for a UK visit visa application?
