Frequently Asked Questions About UK Visit Visas & ETAs

This depends on your nationality. From January 8, 2025, non-European visa-exempt nationals (US, Canada, Australia, etc.) need an ETA (£10). From April 2, 2025, most Europeans also need an ETA. Other nationalities still require Standard Visitor visas. We'll determine exactly what you need based on your passport and travel purpose.

An ETA (£10) is for visa-exempt nationals and allows multiple 6-month visits over 2 years. A Standard Visitor visa (£115) is for nationals who cannot use the ETA system and is typically valid for 6 months. Both allow tourism, business visits, and family visits but have different application processes and requirements.

Both ETAs and Standard Visitor visas typically allow stays up to 6 months per visit. You must leave the UK at the end of each visit and cannot live in the UK through repeated visits. Immigration officers can refuse entry if your travel pattern suggests you're trying to live in the UK.

Permitted activities include tourism, business meetings, conferences, family visits, short courses up to 30 days, medical treatment, and getting married (Marriage Visitor visa). You cannot work, study for extended periods, or access public funds. Specific business activities have detailed rules we can advise on.

Required documents typically include your passport, financial evidence (bank statements, employment letters), accommodation details, travel itinerary, and purpose of visit evidence. If visiting family/friends, you'll need invitation letters and sponsor documentation. We provide comprehensive checklists for your specific circumstances.

ETAs can be applied for immediately and typically process within 3 working days. Standard Visitor visas can be applied for up to 3 months before travel and usually take 3 weeks to process. We recommend applying as early as possible, especially during peak travel seasons.

Visit visas and ETAs generally cannot be extended. You must leave the UK before your authorized period expires and apply for new permission if you wish to return. Limited exceptions exist for medical treatment or compelling compassionate circumstances.

If your ETA is refused, you cannot appeal but can apply for a Standard Visitor visa. If your Standard Visitor visa is refused, you may be able to request an administrative review if there was a case-working error. We can assess refusal reasons and advise on your options.
